First time in Indonesia, and what to sort out before you sail to Komodo

Most visitors enter on a thirty-day visa on arrival or an e-visa, with a passport valid for six months, a return ticket and the free arrival card. Take cash, charge your phone before you board and drink bottled water. Visa fees can change, so check the fee before you fly.

Your passport, your visa and the arrival card

Start with your passport, because nothing else matters if it is short of time. It needs six months of validity from the day you land and two blank pages, and you will be asked for a ticket that shows you leaving again.

Most nationalities then take the thirty-day visa on arrival, or the same visa bought online before the flight, the e-VoA, and it can be extended once. Citizens of the ASEAN countries enter without one. The table below gives the list of countries, the fee and the length of stay; read it with your passport in your hand.

Two things to do before you fly. Check the current visa fee on the official immigration portal and pay only there, since agents charge extra for the same form. And fill in the free All Indonesia arrival card online in the three days before you land; a site that asks you for money for it is not the official one. If you come in through Bali, the table also names the separate tourist levy there.

Visa on Arrival (VoA)Open to nationals of 97 listed countries, including most of Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Japan, South Korea, China, India and the Gulf states. Other nationalities apply in advance at evisa.imigrasi.go.id.
e-VoAThe same 30-day visa, applied for online before you travel at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. Once approved, you must enter within 90 days.
VoA / e-VoA priceIDR 500,000 per person; children pay the same. Fees can change, so check the official site before you fly.
Length of stay30 days from the day you arrive, single entry
ExtensionOnce, by 30 days (60 days in total), for IDR 500,000. Apply at an immigration office about a week before the first 30 days end.
Visa-free entry30 days, not extendable, for citizens of ASEAN countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam.
PassportValid for at least 6 months after your arrival date, with at least 2 blank pages
Onward ticketProof of a return or onward ticket is required for a VoA
All Indonesia arrival cardFree and compulsory. Fill it in within 72 hours before arrival at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id or in the app; it covers immigration, customs and the health declaration.
Arriving in Labuan BajoMost visitors clear immigration in Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya and reach Labuan Bajo on a domestic flight
Bali tourist levyIDR 150,000 per foreign visitor if you enter through Bali, paid at lovebali.baliprov.go.id. It is separate from the visa fee.

Checked 11 October 2026 · Entry rules and fees change: confirm them on the official immigration site before you travel.

Flying to Labuan Bajo

Labuan Bajo has its own airport, Komodo International, ten minutes by car from the harbour, and you reach it on a domestic flight. Bali, Jakarta and Surabaya are the usual connections, and international visitors change planes in Bali or Jakarta. The table below gives the routes, the airlines and the flight times. Schedules change through the year, so look up the flight itself on the day you book it.

For a trip with us, fly in the day before your sailing, so that a late plane costs you an evening and not your cabin. On the first morning of an open trip we collect you from your hotel or the airport between 10:30 and 11:55, and your guide sends you the hour the evening before.

Then the flight home. The three-day trip docks between 10:00 and 11:00 on day three, so an afternoon flight after 13:00 works. The two-day trip docks between 19:00 and 20:30 on day two, so plan a night in Labuan Bajo and a flight the following day. Our hotels page sets out both.

Money, cards and tips

Rupiah is what you spend, and cash is what you carry. Cards work in hotels and larger restaurants, some with a surcharge, but the warung, the market stall and the taxi want notes. Cash machines stand along the harbour road and at the airport and nowhere on the islands, so draw what you need before you board. The table below has the machines, the withdrawal limits and what a card costs you; its exchange rate is a guide, and the rate on the day is the one you pay.

Small notes are the useful ones, for a driver, a porter, a stallholder, and for a tip at the end of the trip. Tipping is never compulsory and we set no amount: the table shows what visitors commonly give, and what you give the crew and the guide is yours to decide. If a machine offers to convert the amount into your home currency, decline.

What you pay us for the trip follows our terms: a 50 percent deposit, the balance 30 days before you sail, and prices that include 11 percent VAT.

CurrencyIndonesian rupiah (IDR); about IDR 16,000 to 16,500 to the US dollar and IDR 17,500 to 18,000 to the euro in mid-2026
ATMsBCA, Mandiri, BNI and BRI on Jl. Soekarno-Hatta near the harbour and at airport arrivals; none in the national park or on the islands. Take cash before you board.
ATM limitsIDR 1,250,000 to 3,000,000 per withdrawal; a local fee of about IDR 25,000 to 50,000, plus your own bank's charges
Cards or cashCards work at hotels, dive centres, boat companies and larger restaurants, often with a surcharge of 2 to 4 per cent. Small eateries, markets, taxis and small shops take cash.
TippingAppreciated, never compulsory. In restaurants 5 to 10 per cent when no service charge is added; for a boat crew, IDR 50,000 to 100,000 per guest per day is a common range.

Phone, plugs and water

The phone first. A SIM card in Indonesia is registered against your passport, Telkomsel reaches furthest around Labuan Bajo and out at sea, and an eSIM can be installed at home and switched on when you land. On board, the Wi-Fi is the crew's hotspot on the mobile network. It works where a phone works and drops between islands, and the boat has no satellite link.

Then the plug. Indonesia runs on 230 volts with two round pins, types C and F, so bring an adapter if your plugs are different. Power cuts in Labuan Bajo are short and come more often than in Bali; charge everything the night before boat day and carry a power bank. Every cabin on Princess Lala has power sockets.

And the water. Tap water in Indonesia is not safe to drink, so buy sealed bottles in town. On our trips drinking water, tea and coffee are in the fare, all day. Each of the three has its own short table below.

SIM cardsEvery SIM must be registered; visitors register with a passport
Best networkTelkomsel has the widest coverage in Labuan Bajo and offshore; signal is still patchy between the islands
eSIMInstall it before you fly and activate it on landing; a typical plan of 25 GB for 30 days costs about USD 15 to 22

Checked 11 October 2026

Mains electricity230 V, 50 Hz; plug types C and F (two round pins)

Weather, manners and health

The dry season runs from April to November and the wet season from December to March, when the downpours are short and heavy and the sea is rougher. The harbour authority holds boats in port most often in the wet months and in spells of strong south-east wind, and it has closed the port in the dry season too. The first table below sets out both seasons, and our best-time page goes through the sea month by month.

Most people on Flores are Catholic, and Labuan Bajo is a port town with a Muslim minority. Cover shoulders and knees in town, in villages and in places of worship, keep swimwear for the beach and the boat, and ask before you photograph someone. The second table adds the small courtesies, such as giving and receiving with the right hand.

For health, buy travel insurance with medical cover and evacuation, because hospitals ask for payment first. Dengue and malaria are present, so protect yourself against mosquito bites; no vaccination is required to enter. On board there is a basic first-aid kit, and the nearest hospital is in Labuan Bajo. The third table lists the hospitals and the emergency numbers: save them in your phone before you sail.

SeasonsDry from April to November: little rain and calmer seas, with wind and chop on crossings in July and August. Wet from December to March: short heavy downpours, heaviest in February, and rougher seas from December to February.
Sailing bansThe harbour authority suspends sailings most often in the wet season and during spells of strong south-east wind

Booking safely, the harbour and the park

Book only with a company you can check. Ask for its business registration number, an office in Labuan Bajo, a written itinerary and an invoice that names the company, the boat, the dates and what is included, and never pay a personal account without one. Ours is PT Komodo Explorer Indonesia, registration number 1805260128363. Very cheap or resold open-trip seats have left tourists at the harbour with no boat, and the first table lists the warning signs.

The harbour master decides whether boats sail and can close the port at a day's notice for weather. The name on your boarding pass must match your passport, so send us your full name exactly as it is printed there. If the boat cannot sail, we put you on another phinisi of the same class or better, on the same dates; if the port is closed, or you would rather not take the other boat, the trip is refunded in full. The second table covers the port rules and the recent closures.

Park fees are paid separately, per person and per day, by e-ticket in your name: IDR 250,000 for international visitors, and for Indonesians IDR 50,000 midweek and IDR 75,000 at weekends. The ticket is issued through the park's own online system, and the third table gives the entry rates, the daily visitor quota and how tickets are bought. Our park-fees page works through the sums.

Weather closuresThe harbour master can close sailings at a day's notice; read the rebooking and refund terms before you pay

Who decidesThe harbour master's office (KSOP Labuan Bajo) issues each boat's sailing permit; the park office (Balai Taman Nasional Komodo) controls access to the park
Boarding passPassengers on boats to the park need an electronic boarding pass, and the name on it must match the passenger list; your boat company registers you
Safety on boardThe harbour master's guideline requires life jackets and liferafts sufficient for everyone on board, no more passengers than the boat's capacity, and a weather check before each sailing permit
Recent closures1 to 8 February 2025: Komodo and Padar closed, Rinca only. 29 December 2025 to 4 February 2026: staged closures, with all tourist boats held from 14 to 20 January 2026. 6 to 8 August 2026: Komodo and Padar closed for waves and wind, Rinca open.

FAQ

Do I need a visa for Indonesia before I book a Komodo trip?

Most nationalities use the thirty-day visa on arrival, or the same visa applied for online before they fly, and need a passport valid for six months and a return ticket. Fees can change, so check the current fee on the official immigration portal. Our fares do not include a visa.

Where can I take out cash before the boat?

At the cash machines along the harbour road in Labuan Bajo and at the airport arrivals hall, where BCA and Mandiri machines work most reliably with foreign cards. There are none on the islands or on the boat. Single withdrawals are capped, so allow more than one visit, and decline any conversion into your home currency.

Is the tap water in Labuan Bajo safe to drink?

No. Use sealed bottled or filtered water in town. On Princess Lala drinking water, tea and coffee are included all day in the open-trip fare of IDR 3,250,000 (≈ USD 199) per person and up, and in the charter fare, so you do not need to buy water on board. Take a bottle with you for the walks ashore.

Will my phone work on the boat?

Where the mobile network reaches. The Wi-Fi on board is the crew's hotspot on that network, so it works near towns and some island stops and drops between islands. The boat has no satellite link. Register your SIM with your passport, and download maps and tickets before you board.

Which plug and voltage do I need?

Mains power is 230 volts, 50 hertz, with two-round-pin plugs of types C and F. Every cabin on Princess Lala has power sockets. Power cuts are more common than in Bali and brief, so charge everything before boat day and carry a power bank.

How do I know a Komodo trip offer is real?

Ask the company for its registration number, a written itinerary and an invoice that names the company, the boat, the dates and what is included. Our operator is PT Komodo Explorer Indonesia, registration number 1805260128363, and our terms are published. Be wary of a price far below everyone else's.
